My Favorite Wildlife Photographs of 2022

“Best of” posts can get a bit tiring this time of year. Yet, I find it both rewarding and enlightening to dive back into the year’s images and find those that stand out.

I’m enough of a perfectionist that the photos I select for any public display (even here on my website) will meet certain technical and aesthetic standards. But on occasion, the memory of the experience surrounding the image is so compelling or meaningful that I drop any pretense of technical perfection in favor of the raw emotion I experienced at the moment.

For me, the photographic experience is mostly about that second word: experience. Photography provides a tool to deeply experience a place. Creating images brings me joy. Seeing, and reflecting on those images months or years later is a way of extending that rewarding emotion.

That is to say, some of these photos are my favorite because of the way the image came out, but others I selected because they are meaningful.

I’ve stopped trying to pull out an arbitrary number of images (Best 25, or 50, or 100, or whatever), and just select those that I like most. In this case, 30.

Enjoy.
