I’ve been mumbling to myself, trying to come up with some way to describe this trip (that doesn’t rely on florid adjectives). So I’ll stick to the general facts:

My clients and I convened in Sitka, Alaska on the 25th of March, followed by 3 long days and one normal-length day on the water, in a private boat, watching an abundance of humpback whales do their thing. And in this case, “doing their thing” means voraciously feeding on the spawning herring. Bubble-netting was the go-to strategy and to date, remains one of the most dramatic wildlife behaviors I’ve ever seen.

And we saw it SO many times. Hundreds of lunges from groups of whales numbering from 2 to 18. With backgrounds that varied from the clean open ocean to old-growth forests, to the herring fleet, to snow-covered volcanoes, and craggy summits. Sweet light, golden light, bright light, cloudy light, were all on the menu.

In fact, the trip was so good and so varied, that I almost hesitate to write about it for fear that it can never be repeated like this again. And it may not be repeatable quite like this, but I’m going to try anyway. Dates are set for 2023.
